One can read and over-write data in RAM. Many computer systems have a memory hierarchy consisting of CPU registers, on-die SRAM caches, external caches, DRAM, paging systems, and virtual memory or swap space on a hard drive.

Be selective as to which brand you purchase and mindful that some RAM is not compatible with your system. Typically, you want to purchase non-parity RAM, as parity checking RAM costs more and offers little benefit to home users. As a suggestion, remove the RAM and identify exactly the type you have before you purchase a new RAM module for your system.
